  • Self-publishing - doing it yourself - general remarks

Forget all those fussy, quirky agents and profit-mad publishers. If you have real faith in your book, why not become your own publisher? Here's the Inter-Read* guide to self-publishing -

    * see bottom of page

    Good points

  • If successful, you can make more money this way than any other: nobody takes a large cut from your sales; no greedy publisher, no agent, no huge retail mark-up, just you and your costs. There have been a few millionaires made this way.
  • You have control over your own stock, selling price, sleeve-notes, and a host of little things.
  • You have absolute control of your copyright and all related rights.
  • It doesn't have to cost a fortune - Infinity Junction can help if asked.
  • If your book sells reasonably well in self-published form, it is a very persuasive lever to bend mainstream publishers' ears should you want to go that way.

    Bad points

  • No advance or guaranteed payments to you, (not that many authors get them anyway.)
  • If you decide to publish in print, (recommended for maximum sales and profit,) you take responsibility for production and distribution, including costs (but Infinity Junction has suggestions and advice which will help you to keep this to an absolute minimum.)
  • You take responsibility for libels or other legal challenges to your book. (You do up to a point with mainstream publishing as well.)

    The alternatives
If you're here hoping to sell your book without trying ordinary agents and publishers first, you need advice! See below or e-mail us; promise we won't try to coerce anyone: we are for the author not on the take from authors. We understand what it's like to be new to the system. We also understand that the old system is slowly breaking down for all except the favoured few, which is why we're here.

  • A good guide we recommend is Budding Bestseller, compiled by Neil Gee, this is unique in that it is printed on demand and continually updated so that it is up to date whenever you order it. Admittedly it's one of our own, but it is completely impartial and covers all aspects of writing and selling your book. It is laser printed - good quality - but, simply bound. At about ŁUK5 this is a bargain for such a useful and up-to-date book.

    Help to Get Self-Published

Infinity Junction started life as a self-publishing self-help group quite a few years ago. As it grew and new members joined, the experience pool reached a point where we were able to become a proper internationally registered publisher- (number 904101.)
We still aim to help self-publishers and there are four ways we can do this. *At it's simplest we can give basic advice and encouragement. Our printed Budding Bestseller guide will help too. And we can offer those books which reach our standard a place in our on-line shop, (terms and conditions apply.) *Next we can professionally typeset your book for you into a format that commercial printers will accept. If you only want a few dozen copies we can suggest someone to Print-On-Demand style 'publish' your work. (see special POD / self-publish services page) *Or we can go one better and arrange a commercial length high quality run. *Finally, and this is only for books we like and consider good enough to bear our own imprint, we can 'collaborative publish' with you - actually this is not really self-publishing, it's much more - full registered publication accompanied by a serious 'collaborative' marketing effort. Collaborative books are financed by you and are produced to top book shop quality.

How it works for self-published books sold through Infinity Junction
(does not apply to 'collaborative' books)

    Don't make
heavy weather of it - publish yourself and sell through Infinity Junction
dotcom   The first and most important thing most people want to know is how much does it cost? Well, the set-up as far as InfinityJunction.com internet system is concerned is absolutely cost free! True. You obviously take some risk in the production of a self-published book, so we think it's reasonable to take the risk as far as our set-up costs are concerned. When your book starts selling, we take a modest commission; we mean modest.
There are minimum standards we expect any book to meet, both in printing and binding quality, (except electronic books,) and the actual content. If it has not already been produced we can offer advice, or for a modest fee we can professionally typeset it for you and even arrange high quality commercial production.
On receipt of an order for printed matter, we pass on to you the customer's requirement and address. This will be by e-mail in most cases so you must read e-mail every day, but it could be by other means. You then post it. Postage is currently charged at approximate cost for most books unless agreement is reached to the contrary; this is an automatic process for on-line sales and takes account of the destination country. What we get is paid back to you in addition to your sale but minus our small commission on the total sale price, (details upon request.) Electronic sales are handled by us for small fee, so you don't have to do anything. When we get paid for your sale (typically 6 weeks in arrears, depending on how and where payment was made by the customer,) we then either post you a cheque, or arrange for appropriate transfer to whatever bank account you specify.
Internet credit-card sales are handled automatically and mail order is processed for you by us, apart from posting books. (In some circumstances we can post books for authors but it requires specific negotiation, and a stock of your book, in each case.) You get a decent sized standard page on the main website including an agreed description, cut down details in the 'shop' and a listing and link in the main book showroom. Infinity Junction itself does not sell self-published books direct to bookshops etc, but where authors arrange it for themselves Infinity Junction makes no claim for commission.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED in low cost SELF-PUBLISHING and selling through Infinity Junction, e-mail infin-info@infinityjunction.com - include a short description of your work if you want a non-standard reply. Also it would help if you say who the target market is and how you've tried to sell it so far, but no more at this stage. Don't include many personal details: e-mail is not a high security system. In return for your enquiry you'll receive an e-mail from us telling you what to do next. (There's is also a postal address- see link below to contacts page.)
