| description | - Fran takes us through the story of herself and husband David seen in two totally different ways. It starts in a black and stirring way and frequently reverts to this style as she writes from after her husband's death - moving and impressively told. Interspersed with this there's an account of how David developed multiple sclerosis and the struggles and prejudice they endured, and the good time times too; this is more matter-of-fact. Fran honestly describes their battle to be as normal as possible, trying to start a family, the lack of understanding shown by certain sections of the medical profession, insensitivity of people they encounter, and the reaction of relatives. The total affect is a rounded, informative, compulsive and sometimes very sad read. |
| I.J. comment | - This is powerful stuff! It is also very well written. If you are recently bereaved or know someone else who is, or you are facing multiple sclerosis, this is an informative, inspiring, but at times grim read. Whatever, it is gripping and sometimes scathing of attitudes to disablement. Highly recommended for general readership, for information of other (potential) sufferers, and also to those medically involved so they can see themselves from another's viewpoint. |
