Unlike your infra-red LED TV remote and some 'wireless' applications such as infra-red mouses, wireless modems (which can send signals though walls) use electromagnetic radiation in the low gigahertz frequency range. (Microwave.) This is considered by many scientists and health experts as both un-proven and potentially unsafe.
We've all heard the scare stories about mobile phone safety, even sometimes about domestic microwave cookers. But consider this - most people are on their mobiles (cell-phones USA) for a matter of minutes per day. Microwave cookers are encased in a metal mesh which traps microwaves inside. Wireless ADSL / broadband routers and modems actually deliberately release this radiation ALL THE TIME.
First-hand accounts from Infinity Junction friends describe how a doctor and her family suffered, sleep disturbance, heart palpitations, migraines, headaches and general malaise all starting at the same time. At first it was thought to be a natural occurrence, a passing virus maybe, or other possible causes. But then when the new router, (Netgear DG824M modem gateway working on 2·4 gigahertz,) was turned off, suddenly they all felt better. What's more, since this was swapped for a non-wireless hard-wired equivalent, the symptoms have not re-occurred.
While this instance involving just five individuals cannot be seen as proof of health hazard, it does point very strongly to a long-held suspicion that microwave transmissions are harmful to human health. And we have numerous second-hand accounts of similar effects from microwave routers and also microwave cell-phone towers.
One of the problems which needs addressing at government level is lack of clear labelling - presumably Netgear and the others don't want to plaster their boxes with the word - 'microwave' being a very dodgy marketing term these days. No doubt they would claim that it does state 2·4 GHz, but how many people know that's microwave? Perhaps its time for a statutory warning of all forms of radiation given off by domestic appliances.
If you are uncertain of whether you have inadvertently introduced microwaves into your home, read the intructions or contact your dealer. If it's not too old to take it back, swap it for the safer hard-wired version - that's Infinity Junction's advice.New research-
A mobile phone company funded reasearch project carried out by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and Wayne State Univesity in USA (released 2008) now shows a definite link between microwave radiation from cell-phones and health. They showed clearly that use of the mobile phone can cause 'insomnia, headaches and confusion.' The study also suggests that the amount of 'deep sleep' is reduced causing the sufferer to feel tired. If these intermittently used devices can do that, what more damage can a permanently on modem do?
Just a few weeks on from that study, an Israeli study of mobile phone usage and salivary gland cancer, published in The American Journal of Epidemiology, showed a 50% increase of cases in heavy mobile phone users, (2 hours or more per day,) compared to a similar sample of occasional or zero mobile phone users. There is a pretty solid body evidence now that microwaves even at fairly low levels can cause disease.
